The setting of important events, Laguna became capital of the República Juliana on July 29th, 1839. The town's narrow streets, part of the Azorian architectural heritage, remain as a symbol of 300 years of history. In 1895 Laguna was proclaimed historic town. Anita was a local and national history woman who fought several battles and is nowadays referred to as Heroin of Two Worlds because she fought both in Brazil and in Uruguay. The building serving as a museum today was originally a prison and it dates back to 1720. The tour proceeds with a visit to the church of Santo Antonio dos Anjos, a baroque construction located downtown. Inside we can see the famous painting by Victor Meirelles (one of Brazil's famous painters) called Imaculada Conceição.
